Axie Infinity is a turn-based blockchain card game in which players fight monsters and other players using mythical creatures called Axies. To some extent, this is a real digital universe, with its own economy, game strategies, and earnings of SLP and AXS tokens.
At first glance, the game may seem quite simple, but you need to try to think over your combinations several steps ahead at a higher level. At the same time, you should not forget about the opponent’s cards, whose combinations can disrupt your plans.
A wide variety of Axies themselves and their skills allow you to build a team exactly for your style of play. There is essentially nothing to compare Axie Infinity with. It is the most similar to Hearthstone from traditional gaming and Gods Unchained from crypto gaming.
We are sure you are anxious to know how to start playing Axie Infinity. Below you will find information about Axie characters and learn how to build the best team. Let’s get started!
Basic Characteristics of Axies
Let’s start our Axie Infinity adventure guide with the basic information about Axies. Each Axie is an ERC-721 NFT token, which has characteristics determining its role on the battlefield:
- HP – determines the maximum health of Axie.
- SPEED – determines the speed of Axie and its turn. If the speed is the same, then the turn order will be as follows: High Speed > Low HP > High Morale > Low Axie ID.
- SKILL – used to calculate bonus damage from combo attacks (when one Axie plays several cards). Formula = (card damage) * (skill) / 500.
- MORALE – determines an Axie’s critical strike chance, counterattack chance, the chance of entering ‘Last Stand’, and the number of ‘Last Stand’ turns.
The developers limited the sum of all four characteristics to 164 points to achieve a balance. The tables below show the basic characteristics, a total of 140 points for each class.
Axie has 6 body parts, each of which adds +4 points in total – 164 points along with the basic characteristics.
If we consider a purebred Axie, whose all 6 body parts belong to the same class as the Axie itself, then they will have the following characteristics:
Classes, Cards & Body Parts Review
Once we have considered the key characteristics in our Axie Infinity guide, let’s figure out the classes and body parts that determine these indicators! Belonging to one class or another is determined by the ‘body’ of the Axie, and each class has its own color! There are 9 classes in total:
The classes highlighted in bold (Dusk, Dawn, and Mech) are special classes created when breeding Bugs and Beasts (Mech), Reptiles and Aquatic (Dusk), Birds and Plants (Dawn).
In addition to the class, each Axie has 6 body parts that define its characteristics (and cards). Let’s take this cute Beast as an example:
- Eyes – Chubby – ‘native’ eyes of the Beast (+1 SPEED / +3 MORALE)
- Ears – Nyan (+1 SPEED / +3 MORALE)
- Back – Ronin (+1 SPEED / +3 MORALE) + Single Combat card
- Mouth – Nut Cracker (+1 SPEED / +3 MORALE) + Nut Crack card
- Horns – Wing Horn – Bird’s body part (+3 SPEED / +1 MORALE) + Smart Shot card
- Tail – Nut Cracker (+1 SPEED / +3 MORALE) + Nut Throw card
Axie Infinity Guide: In-Game Balance
Balance has often been a sore point in popular online games. Sky Mavis, the development team of Axie Infinity, use the ‘RPS bonus’, which stands for rock-paper-scissors:
This scheme shows the advantages and disadvantages of the classes in relation to each other. It must be used when calculating outgoing and incoming damage. The class of the attacking card is compared with the class of the body of the defending Axie.
It is important to separate these two concepts – ‘card class’ and ‘body class’. In addition, when an Axie of a specific class uses a card of its class, it receives a 10% bonus to attack/shield. Bonuses are summed up. For example:
- A Bird card used to attack an Axie Bug deals 15% additional damage.
- A Reptile card used to attack an Axie Bug deals 15% less damage.
- An Axie Plant using a Plant card will deal 10% more damage and gain a 10% shield.
- An Axie Beast using a Beast card against an Axie Plant deals approximately 25% more damage.
Special classes deserve special mention:
- Dusk: 7.5% Damage/Shield bonus for Reptile and Plant cards
- Dawn: 7.5% Damage/Shield Bonus for Birds and Aquatic Cards
- Mech: 7.5% Damage/Shield Bonus for Beasts and Insects Cards
Axie Infinity Adventure Guide: Positions & Role on the Battlefield
Positioning is crucial, and primarily because of the way the Axie chooses a target to attack. And they choose it quite simply – they attack the nearest one (if two targets are at the same distance from the attacker, the choice will be random).
This also means that there is usually a tank on the front line, which takes most of the damage, and those who must manage to do as much damage as possible are on the back line. You can also find teams where DDs are in the middle line, leaving the late game to the tough guy from the back line. So, how to play Axie Infinity?
Tank in Axie Infinity
Every team needs a strong Axie in the front line to absorb all of the enemy’s damage. Tanks will defend your back lines while you try to get energy and cards for combos. Otherwise, all your weak Axies will simply die before they even have time to deal damage.
Axie Plants are the best candidate for the tank position. They have the most health, and their cards have bonuses that allow them to heal themselves or allies and in every possible way increase vitality. Sometimes players use Reptiles as an off-tank (second semi-tank, with good survivability, high speed, and medium damage). Aquatic creatures have pretty good vitality indicators, and with the right body parts, they can compete with the above classes in the tank’s position.
Damagers, DDs, or damaging Axies – call them whatever you want. These guys hit really hard. Their task is to deal as much damage as possible or play a combination of 3 or 4 cards that will eliminate one of the opponents.
Beasts and Birds usually deal serious damage. They have high speed and a lot of morale, but low HP and poor shield, so they are generally located in the middle or back line. Aquatic creatures are worth highlighting as they can compete with the above classes.
A support fighter can heal itself and partners or steal energy from the enemy, and so on. Axies with a decent amount of health and useful effects are excellent for the role of support.
You can often come across teams where the second DD acts as a support, having cards that improve the synergy of the entire deck or team.
