#1 Beeple’s Digital Art for $69M

Surely, many of you have heard of NFT in the context of Christie’s auction. The NFT painting of the artist Beeple ‘Everydays: The First 5000 Days’ was bought for $69 million. That’s a world record — Beeple created the best NFT in the short history of their existence. Online trading went on for two weeks.

A crypto-investor acquired the artist’s picture under the pseudonym Metakovan. Who is hiding under the nickname is unknown. However, as CNBC found out, Metakovan is the co-founder of the Metapurse NFT art collection, which collects non-fungible tokens for display in virtual museums. Metakovan now has the largest collection of Beeple’s artworks.

The TV channel managed to talk with Metakovan’s partner in Metapurse, who is hiding under the nickname Twobadour. He said in the interview:

To us, Beeple represents the most iconic artist of this digital generation, and this piece, in particular, we believe, is the most valuable piece of this generation.

Twobadour also added that their goal is not to raise money but to decentralize and democratize art. Christie’s, in turn, added that, in fact, the buyer would receive a long chain of numbers and letters for $69 million.

#2 CryptoPunk

NFTs of the CryptoPunk industry were sold for thousands and millions of dollars throughout the year. The most expensive artwork is CryptoPunk #3100. It was sold for $7.58 million.

The NFT depicts an alien with a blue-green skin tone. This copy is considered very rare (there are 9 in total), and therefore it was sold for such a big sum.

According to Larva Labs, the current owner of the NFT put it up for sale for $149.2 million — that is, the price has increased more than 19 times.

#3 Digital Artworks of Grimes & Elon Musk

Elon Musk’s ex-girlfriend, Grimes, raised $6 million on NFT by selling her digital art. One series of 10 works was exhibited at the Nifty Gateway on February 28 — some were in a single copy, others in thousands of copies. The most expensive one was a single-copy video — Death of the Old. The winning bid reached almost $389,000.

Apparently inspired by the success of Grimes, Elon Musk composed a track about NFT and announced that he would sell it as an NFT project.

But after a couple of days, the entrepreneur (and musician) tweeted that he had changed his mind:

Actually, doesn’t feel quite right selling this. Will pass.

#4 Jack Dorsey & His First Tweet

Twitter creator Jack Dorsey sold the first-ever tweet for $2.9 million during the Valuables online auction. It was bought by the head of Bridge Oracle Hakan Estavi as NFT.

Dorsey thanked Estavi and said that he had sent the money received to charity. This sum in bitcoins was received by the Give Directly Fund in Africa.

#5 One Calendar Year of Recorded Farts

NFT hype also spawned pretty strange art sales. The 36-year-old filmmaker from New York, Alex Ramirez-Mallis, put up for auction farts that he and his friends had recorded during isolation.

The recording can be purchased as a single 52-minute file called ‘One Calendar Year of Recorded Farts.’ The collection was bought for 0.22 ETH ($949 at the current exchange rate).
