What Is Axie Infinity: Everything You Need to Know

Axie Infinity, which was launched in 2018, is the largest of its kind blockchain browser game that has seen a rapid increase in the number of players since May 2021. Over a million users play the game every day and its native token (AXS) is also very popular. The development studio Sky Mavis relies on the popular trend of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and enables the collection, buying, and selling of so-called Axies — small fantasy creatures that fight each other.

What Makes Axie Infinity so Unique?

Basically, Axie Infinity was developed as a dApp and is based on the Ethereum blockchain. The main features of the game are based strongly on the worldwide popular Pokemon series and also on various monsters called Axies, which can be collected and traded as NFTs. The developers also use an ERC-20 standard. The big advantage of the game is that the monsters and objects are actually unique. For example, some Axies appear only once in the game.

The gameplay itself is relatively simple but still has some characteristic features. Thus, the little monsters have four different properties (health, morale, skill, and speed) that directly influence battles with other monsters. In addition, there are six different body parts (eyes, ears, horns, mouth, back, tail) that differ from Axie to Axie and boost the four properties. In addition, there are nine different classes that have unique strengths and weaknesses compared to other classes. This creates an exciting battle system with different strategies.

An active team always consists of three Axies, which can be chosen from your own collection and sent into battle. Users have an opportunity to play in adventure mode or to compete against other players in various player-versus-player modes (PvP). In each mode, you can win AXS tokens, which in turn are used for other game mechanics or can be used for staking.

A large number of in-game resources are tokenized and can be traded on P2P marketplaces. This also includes plots of land that can be upgraded by players using various items. In total, the Axie Infinity World ‘Lunacia’ consists of 90,601 plots of land, which are divided into seven types (Savannah, Forest, Arctic, Mystic, Genesis, Lunas Landing, and Map).

What Are AXS Tokens Used For?

Axie Infinity Token has a total supply of 270 million. Of these, over 60 million tokens were in circulation in mid-August 2021.

While AXS tokens are mainly obtained by fighting with other Axies, they can be used for various types of in-game content. Currently, the main use is still in the breeding of new Axies. Each monster can be used in breeding up to seven times, while each offspring can be used for fighting, breeding, or can be offered for sale.

In addition, AXS tokens can be used in:

      • Staking: This function is currently not available, but according to the developer it’s planned for 2021.
      • Buying and selling: AXS tokens are used in the official marketplace. This is where the Axies are sold by players to players.
      • Auctions: The developers conduct auctions of land, in-game items, or unique Axies. AXS tokens are then required to bid.
      • Governance: The idea behind this system is that the holders of AXS tokens can have a say in the game development. The more AXS tokens a player has, the greater their influence on the decisions.

What Are the Key Future Plans?

Sky Mavis has many plans for the months and years to come. Among other things, Lunacia SDK is currently being developed, with which players and developers can create additional game experiences using Axie Infinity Art assets. It should be a kind of map editor, with which various campaigns and games can be created. These then remain as NFT and can be sold on the marketplace. However, all of this will only appear with the Land Gameplay update, which is planned for 2022.

In addition, many other features are planned — including a dedicated social media platform for the game, tournaments, as well as integration of achievements and reward systems. In addition, the game is planned to be released on Android and iOS, which will greatly expand the player base once again. This means that the AXS token should remain a relevant cryptocurrency in the future.
